Institute of Restoration and Materialscience

Institute of Restoration and Materialscience of Art Academy of Latvia (LMA RMII) has been founded in 2024. The purpose of its establishment - to provide in material science based support to restorers, artists and other specialists related to the field of art and tangible cultural heritage.

Scientific study of materials is the essential prerequisite for the contemporary and sustainable preservation of cultural heritage. By determining the chemical, physical and mechanical properties of the authentic material substance, it is possible to identify the historically used materials and technologies, to recognize the methods of creation and author himself, to understand the aging processes of materials and the factors contributing to them. As a result, it is possible to make scientifically based choices of materials and methodologies, not only while performing restoration works, but also during the creation of new art works.

The studies of materials are the basis for successful determination of the authenticity and age of art objects, it provides knowledge for professional growth and ensures support for the preventive restoration and high-quality preservation of Latvia's tangible cultural heritage.

The research of materials offered by RMII is intended for any specialist or organization involved in preservation of cultural heritage – starting from students to researchers, collectors and other owners or managers of cultural heritage, from small museums to state institutions, educational establishments, churches, non-governmental organizations, etc.

The main directions of activities of the Institute:

  • practical research of the physical, mechanical and chemical properties of cultural heritage materials, identification of materials (components of paint materials - pigments and binders, natural and artificial silicate materials (natural stone, mortars, plasters, ceramics, glass), paper and paper products, textiles, metal, natural and synthetic polymers, etc.);
  • consultations on issues related to the research, identification and preservation of cultural heritage materials;
  • studies of contemporary art materials;
  • involvement in the study process aimed to increase the students' understanding and knowledge of materials, their research and identification;
  • cooperation with educational establishments, state and private structures, public organizations related to the cultural heritage sector in Latvia and abroad;
  • dissemination of research results in local and international scientific publications, conferences, seminars, etc.;
  • participation in national and international projects;
  • organization of local and international conferences, seminars, discussions, and other events related to the preservation of cultural heritage;
  • creation of databases related to cultural heritage;
  • promotion of public awareness of the research of cultural heritage materials, it’s importance in ensuring high-quality restoration and sustainable preservation.
