EXHIBITION "IMPRINTS OF A CENTURY" CELEBRATING THE CENTENNIAL OF THE CERAMICS DEPARTMENT
The Ceramics Department of the Art Academy of Latvia, founded in 1924, celebrates its 100th anniversary this year with a contemporary ceramics exhibition, "Imprints of a Century." The exhibition will take place from September 27 to October 18 at the main building of the Art Academy of Latvia, in the Aula, located at 13 Kalpaka Boulevard, Riga.
The first head of the Ceramics Department, Rūdolfs Pelše, established the theoretical and practical foundations of professional ceramics education at the Academy a hundred years ago. R. Pelše, the first professionally trained Latvian ceramist, significantly influenced the development of ceramics as an independent art medium with his knowledge of ceramic technologies, techniques, and material use.
The exhibition will feature works by both current students and professors of the Ceramics Department. It is structured as a snapshot of one academic year, showcasing works created during the current study year. Each piece serves as an “imprint of a century” – a narrative of the era in which it was created, and a journey by the artist through the world of ceramics.
Visitors will have the opportunity to explore various techniques, forms, and stylistic approaches that characterize contemporary ceramics. Over time, the perception of ceramics has transformed from a functional and applied craft to a decorative form of artistic expression. Today, ceramics is a fully recognized branch of modern visual arts, encompassing diverse and conceptual solutions, with works standing out for their thoughtfulness and imagery. From traditional and inspiring approaches to innovative and experimental ones, "Imprints of a Century" will reveal the richness and evolution of ceramics.
The exhibition offers not only a visual experience but also an invitation to understand the significance of ceramic art and its impact on cultural heritage. It provides a platform for artists to share their creativity and contributions to the field of ceramics, while also highlighting the essential role of the Art Academy of Latvia in ceramic education.
The exhibition will open on September 26 at 17:00 and will be on view until October 18. Everyone is welcome to visit the exhibition at the Art Academy of Latvia, in the Aula, from Monday to Friday, between 10:00 and 14:30, and 15:00 to 18:00. Admission is free.
