From June 13 to July 7 the best work of graduates and students of LMA Faculty of Design from academic year 2022/2023, as well as the display created for this year's SaloneSatellite – “What’s in/on your head?” –  will be exhibited at the Art Academy of Latvia at Kalpaka bulvāris 13.

Design Days ‘23 exhibition “Shout" aims to open the doors of the Faculty of Design to a broader public and highlight the processual nature of design, proceeding in the strategic direction commenced in early 2022 in the context of the 60th anniversary of the Faculty of Design. 

By including the best of all output of the Faculty of Design, the new format allows a more comprehensive analysis of the study process. The series of events aims to provide a self-realisation platform for students, to educate and involve the society in creative processes, and position the study programs at LMA Faculty of Design as progressive and competitive, providing a solid foundation for the development of design in Latvia, the Baltics and worldwide.

The subjects tackled in the exhibition this year are education, heritage, conceptual design, social inclusion, anxiety and related matters, showcased by over 30 pieces by the most outspoken young artists.

Why such a ‘loud’ title?

Maija Rozenfelde, Head of the Faculty of Design at the Art Academy of Latvia: “At a time when we are surrounded by chaos this century hasn't seen, by war, pandemic, information noise of unprecedented density, it is difficult to be seen, heard and noticed. Important issues in the society are tackled in the form of protest, "shouting" one's outbursts via a Twitter hashtag or posting a comment that's as provocative as possible. A shout is also a culmination of emotions on an individual level, that's when what we have accumulated   escapes in full force into the loud open. Finally – there is no life without a shout, as that's how we come into this world. Similarly, in this collection of events we are going to witness the culmination of the study process and the “birth” of each participant in the public space.”

The Design Days ‘23 exhibition will also feature highlights from other departments at the Faculty of Design as well as the LMA student display What's in/on your head?, created for SaloneSatellite space for young designers and design schools at the Salone del Mobile international design fair and exhibited in Milan between April 18 and 23.

Converting their research process into various materials, students of five specialties at LMA – product design, metal design, fashion design, graphic design and textile – together with faculty members have interpreted the crown as a symbolic synergy of power and will where social, ethical and philosophical categories interact.

Exhibition “Shout” by students and graduates of LMA Faculty of Design will be open to the public Tuesdays to Saturdays from June 13 to July 7 between 13.00 and 20.00 at Kalpaka bulvāris 13 in the ground floor hall, hallways and adherent rooms. On the closing day, 7 July, the exhibition is open until 17.00. Closed on public holidays. Opening event at 18.00 on June 12. A special Communication day event will be held at 18.00 on June 14, with presentations of the exhibited artwork.
