Art Academy of Latvia took part in the Fair already for the seventh time, which was made possible by the generous support of the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia, Technology Transfer Contact Point of the Art Academy of Latvia and the Ministry of Culture. The regular presence of the Art Academy of Latvia in Stockholm ensures that among Baltic and Nordic universities it has gained considerable international recognition.

During this volatile period when Latvia more than ever strives for economic development and improved international co-operation on carrying out innovative projects it is important to recognize the added value that can be provided by the sphere of design. When it comes to producing innovative products that correspond to current needs design industry comes in handy. Participation in the Stockholm Furniture Fair proves that design education in Latvia is competitive and internationally compatible with its counterparts elsewhere in Europe.

Building contacts with the industry’s leaders from around the world, a chance to look into the commercial aspects of design world and establishing direct contact with producers and distributors are among the most important benefits which one can gain only by participating in large-scale international fairs. In the section “Greenhouse” young designers and design universities from Scandinavia present the most up-to-date achievements in furniture and interior accessory design.

This year’s theme of the Art Academy of Latvia’s stand was craftsmanship. Part of the display consisted of works which were developed during an international design workshop in late 2011 when Master’s students of the Art Academy of Latvia and Eindhoven Design Academy came together to crate new products using various traditional Latvian crafts techniques. Stockholm Furniture Fair featured works created by the following students of the Department of Design: Gita Deksne, Indra Merca, Baiba Linga-Bērziņa, Ints Neiberts, Liene Podiņa, Agnese Pundiņa, Laura Danilāne and Jekaterina Stakle.

Similarly to previous years, Art Academy’s exposition at the Stockholm Furniture Fair was set up by a working team comprising students and faculty members of the Department of Design. In addition to the support received from the Technology Transfer Contact Point, Art Academy collaborates closely with various Latvian producers and other partners.
