"The majority of the works exhibited have been painted outdoors. I did not choose complicated subjects, but rather tried to depict the beauty of nature by painting forest scenes, a river inlet, haystacks, flowers... In doing so I tried to find the best colouring and brushstroke. I did aspire not to repeat myself and each time to employ a different perspective when looking at the world, be it a brisk winter scene, the glow of a summer evening, brightness of autumn or the eternally beautiful springtide," says the artist, restorer and lecturer Jānis Bokmanis.

Jānis Bokmanis (1929) is one of the most experienced restorers of monumental painting in Latvia. In 1953 he graduated from the Interior Decoration Department of the Riga Secondary School of Applied Arts and in 1977 received the highest qualification in monumental painting restoration. Jānis Bokmanis is a member of the Artist Union of Latvia and since 1993 he is a master restorer.

During his long career the current lecturer of the Art Academy of Latvia has performed various research and restoration works at the Latvian National Opera, St Peter′s and St Paul′s churches, Latvian National Museum of Art, Rundāle Palace and other significant historic buildings. As a restorer working at Rundāle Palace Jānis Bokmanis researched the plafonds and monumental wall paintings, developed restoration methodology, performed the evaluation of the condition of various premises and carried out other duties related to the restoration of the Rose Room, Red Salon, the Duke′s bedroom, Billiards Hall and the Grand Gallery. Jānis Bokmanis also took part in establishing the Latvian Restoration Association and over the years has participated in various exhibitions in Latvia and abroad.

Since 1998 Jānis Bokmanis has been teaching at the Department of Restoration of the Art Academy of Latvia where he is providing training for the young restorers. Already for several years students under his supervision have been working on the restoration of the Academy′s wall and ceiling paintings which is an important contribution to the conservation and restoration of the Academy′s building - a remarkable state architecture monument.
