| With 90 participating artists representing 18 different countries, the biennale offers a thematically and technically varied exposition featuring artworks that have been carefully selected by a jury. The award which Rolands Gross received for three nude paintings from the cycle "In the Window" is a great acknowledgement both of the artist′s remarkable technical virtuosity and of the Latvian pastel art as such. As an artist, Rolands Gross works with various techniques. His art is characterised by a remarkable diversity of forms and a broad range of conceptual and expressive approaches. Therefore it is a special honour for the artist to open his solo show at "Laiptų galerija" in Šiauliai, Lithuania, on 18 November 2011 at 6 PM. The exhibition is organised following the invitation of the host country to celebrate the 93rd anniversary of the Independence of Latvia. Šiauliai is one of the largest cities in the region of Žemaitija and „Laiptų galerija", furthermore, is well known to many Latvian artists as an important centre of cultural life and a location of many international plain air workshops. The artworks of Rolands Gross are of fascinating perfection, a quality that is rarely seen in contemporary painting. At the same time, a sense of surprising freedom is present in his works which are carried out in various techniques - water-colours, pastels, oil paintings and, over the last years, also a distinctive author′s technique that reveals Rolands Gross′ deep interest in texture and adds to his artworks a rare element of plasticity. Rolands Gross is also known as one of the best drawers in Latvia. The exhibition at "Laiptų galerija" is the artist′s 10th solo show which showcases a large number of artworks that allow the observer to follow the artist′s style from early 90s up until nowadays. The First International Pastel Biennial of Spain is on show until 18 November 2011 at the Edificio Histórico de la Universidad de Oviedo and Rolands Gross′ solo show at „Laiptų galerija" will be on view from 18 November until 1 December 2011. |
